Grand Opening of UTEP’s New Center for History Teaching & Learning

El Paso, Texas – The History Department at the University of Texas at El Paso is pleased to announce the grand opening of a new Center for History Teaching & Learning on Tuesday, September 1, in room 334 of the Liberal Arts Building on the UTEP Campus. Open houses for students and local school teachers will feature refreshments, information about the new MA in History Teaching, and free giveaways.

The Center has been created to promote scholarly teaching among department faculty, to support teacher education among our students, and to provide professional development opportunities for area social studies teachers. The Center hosts an annual summer institute for teachers, a regular social studies workshop series, and an online clearinghouse of teaching resources. All of the materials are free for students and teachers.

Schedule of Events: Tuesday, September 1, 2009

2:00‐5:00 p.m.
Students interested in becoming history or social studies teachers are invited to tour the facilities, learn about undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and eat free pizza!

5:00‐7:00 p.m.
Social studies teachers from El Paso‐area school districts are invited to tour the facilities, attend a workshop on relevance in the classroom, and enjoy refreshments and door prizes. The workshop is hosted in cooperation with the El Paso del Norte Council for the Social Studies and attendees will earn one hour of CPE credit toward professional recertification. University parking permits are available to those who contact the Center in advance.
