Dr. Cartwright addresses high school teachers in 2011 at a summer institute sponsored by Humanities Texas.

One June 1, Dr. Bradley J. Cartwright will begin interim service as the director of UTEP’s Center for History Teaching & Learning. He will succeed Dr. Keith A. Erekson who founded the Center and served as the director since 2009.

Cartwright earned his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, his M.A. from the University of Texas at El Paso, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. His research focuses on the nineteenth-century North American West and the Pacific Basin, where he examines the ways in which race, gender, and nationality informed encounters between Anglo Americans and non-white peoples. At UTEP, Cartwright teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on American imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the U.S. War with Mexico, the Pacific World, and the teaching of the U.S. history survey course. He is the History Department’s liaison to the Liberal Arts Honors Program and project coordinator for the Large Class Project at UTEP. He served with Erekson as co-director of the History Survey Project and has been a regular and popular participant in the Center’s summer teacher institutes.

Erekson has accepted the invitation to serve as the new director of the Church History Library for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. He will remain a member of the Center’s Advisory Committee. The Center for History Teaching & Learning was founded in May 2009 and is operated by the History Department in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso.
